Tales as old as time are always being made anew. We reinvent fairy tales, reinterpret them, and retell them. We make them our own in the telling. The tradition of feminist fairy tales is not a new one, but it holds exciting possibilities in our contemporary moment. This long tradition of feminist fairy tales includes the work of Angela Carter, Charlotte Bronte, A.S. Byatt, and even, now, Disney. Fairy tale traditions overlap each other: feminist fairy tales conspiring with ecological retellings, fairy tales explore themes of race or class while bumping into queer interpretations.

We'll touch on many of these intersectional possibilities in this class. What possibilities do fairy tales hold for exploring contemporary identities and experience? How can we unleash these possibilities in our work? We'll read fairy tales by writers like Emma Donoghue, Aimee Bender, and Joyce Carol Oates, and many more; complete generative writing exercise; and learn about the history and future of fairy tales, in order to write and revise our own.
