"Who am I? Where am I? What am I supposed to do?" These are three essential questions posed by Robert Thayer, author of LifePlace: Bioregional Thought and Practice. The ways in which we interact with a familiar place or encounter a new place, however, complicates the situation. In our migratory, global, and interconnected world, more questions abound. How does the place we come from define us? How does our presence impact new places we enter? What happens when one is displaced? What are the different privileges offered within a place?

Using readings and writing prompts from both poetry and prose, we will coax inspiration out of place and question our own relationships to place. We will produce five new pieces based on writing prompts and imitations drawn from these readings. We will focus on writing from and out of place, allowing for meditations on our ecological, transnational, and interdependent identities. We will consider how setting impacts story and how place impacts purpose. By sharing our writing with each other, we will further spur discussion and critical thought as we search for answers to the callings of home.
