Stories About the True North
Date: 1/17/18 – 3/14/18
Class Level: Open to All Levels

In this class, we'll read stories dealing with characters trying to survive against the harsh climate of the north—one a short story (Jack London's "To Build a Fire"), the other a novel (Tim O'Brien's Northern Lights). We will write our own stories with these models in mind, covering the basic elements of fiction, plus the process of writing fiction.
Students will share their ideas about the two readings and have a chance to share their writing with the class. The survival stories students write can be any length, but it's best if they run at least 2,500 words. By the end of the course, we'll have a good sense of what makes an exciting "man vs. nature" story.
