In this class, we will explore different methods of writing about our experiences with illness. From science writing to historical fiction and diaries to essays, there are a multitude of approaches to writing about illness. Weekly readings will provide examples from these approaches, while related exercises will guide us through ways of incorporating their techniques in our own writing. Approaches covered will include incorporating medical and scientific research, writing the fictionalized narrative, and forms like prose poetry and diary entries. Through this exploration of different techniques, we will learn how our experiences of illness can be contextualized in a variety of ways, and the multitude of ways there are for telling our own stories. Readings will include work by Bob Flanagan, Siri Hustvedt, Anne Boyer, Gregg Bordowitz, and others.
