Every book has a story of its own, a path leading from the initial spark to the finished form. And while no two books follow quite the same path, all are shaped by a similar array of market forces, craft concerns, and a cast of necessary support characters. In this class, we'll explore 11 lessons from 11 contemporary first-time authors. The authors range widely in approach and genre, and the only common link between them is that they found debut publishing success.
This class is based on extensive interviews that the teaching artist conducted to write a forthcoming book. We will cover tips and lessons learned on writing and publishing a book from beginning to end, including idea generation, developing a process, building a support network, revising the manuscript, finding the right publishing approach, building awareness, and ultimately moving on to the next project. While each publication path is unique, we can learn important lessons from authors of all types and apply them to our own writing journey. The authors we'll learn from in this class include: Cynthia Bond, Brian Benson, Rebecca Makkai, Clara Bensen, Delilah Dawson, Alan Heathcock, Eric Smith, Edan Lepucki, Courtney Maum, Zetta Elliott, and Monona Wali.
