Is your great story idea not looking so great on the page? Not sure how to fix it? Whether you are writing fiction or nonfiction, and whether you're in the midst of a rewrite or a first draft, this class offers tools to help you dig into and around your narrative to better capture its essence.
We'll first learn what techniques can bring dialogue alive—and what can kill it. Find out how to develop a more complex (and more real) main character and what's essential to include for supporting characters. Discover how to develop tension in scenes and how to build it out through your narrative arc. Learn how to put setting and atmosphere to work in developing plot. We'll end by examining how elements of the surreal can reveal complexities of truth.
This class complements the class "Six Keys to Re-vision," but that class is not a prerequisite for this one. Each week we'll read a short fiction and a short memoir piece to learn what guidance the masters of our time have on the topic addressed. Take advantage of an in-class workshop and a private half-hour consult with instructor. Copy fee of $3 due at first class session.
