Among other things, a good foil can sharpen the characterization of the protagonist, create tension, generate humor, and add variety. In this session, we will look at different types of foils, using examples from Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky, Kurosawa, and Wilde as well as Frog and Toad, Harry Potter, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and The Princess in Black. In the latter half of class, we'll shift to an examination of our own works in progress with an eye toward incorporating a character foil or identifying and strengthening an existing one. If students don't wish to work on a work in progress, writing exercises will be provided in order to generate new work.
