Science fiction and fantasy may be known for big ideas and incredible locales, but what makes stories really come alive are the characters. We will cover a character-driven approach to storytelling that generates rich, complex characters first and then builds a tale from their inherent conflicts. We will explore techniques for generating interesting characters, then explore ways to bring those characters into our fascinating worlds. We will study a variety of ways to introduce characters into a story quickly and efficiently, exploring different techniques that will work with a variety of writing styles.

Through those characters' eyes, we will experience the wonder of our science fiction and fantasy worlds, creating conflicts that drive the story forward. Beginning writers are welcome, but come ready to write. Each student should leave the class with a fully fleshed-out character and the conflict that will get the story rolling. Bring a bag lunch, and we'll eat and take breaks as needed.
