In this class, we will discuss the fundamentals of memoir writing—the difference between memoir and autobiography, the pitfalls of writing about people you know and love, audience, shape, theme, and scope. We will spend time discussing veracity, research, reporting, and truth, and will debate the eternal question: Is it okay to make up details for memoir? (Answer: No. But let's talk.)

Each week we will have in-class assignments and recommended reading. We'll set up a google docs site for handouts and recommended memoirs, which all of you can contribute to. We'll work on writing nonfiction that reads like fiction; we'll work on turning real people into characters. We will spend half the class on writing exercises and sharing work, and the other half on lecture and discussion. There will be homework! The shortness of the class doesn't allow for the workshopping of memoirs.
