Chapbooks became popular in the early 19th century. Simply put, they are small booklets of poems, sometimes containing a theme. In this Loft-MCBA collaborative class, students will draft and edit 6-8 short poems, such as haiku, tanka, cinquain. These will provide content for a chapbook which students will design using either a traditional pamphlet stitch or a Japanese stab binding.

Instruction will include sequencing of poems, book design, organization of pages, and binding skills. Each student's poems will become a physical object, digitally printed in a small edition. Class will meet in MCBA studios and both teaching artists will be present for all class sessions. This class is suitable for all skill levels, but students will need to be somewhat proficient in Microsoft Word, Pages, or Adobe InDesign. Co-taught with book artist Julie Baugnet. A materials fee of $10, included in the tuition, covers supplies for the class.
