Perhaps you are a writer who stores source material in notebooks or journals. Or perhaps you've collected files & notes—print or digital—documenting your experience. Or maybe you've written in journals for the sheer joy of playing in language. Over time, this work accumulates. This class is for writers like you, who have a storehouse of such writing and now want to transform it into a manuscript.
Inspired by writers like Annie Dillard, who found her way out of writing difficulties through her writer's journal, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, who devised an indexing system for his, this class charts a course from source material to manuscript. Designed as a focused lab, the class includes exercises for identifying suitable material & crafting it into drafts of poems, creative nonfiction, or fiction. Through a layered feedback and workshop process, students clarify a project, begin drafts, and devise a workable plan to complete it. Small copy fee.
