The first draft of a novel can feel like a romping delight. Worlds are built, characters created, plots begun—and then there approach the dreaded creatures: Editing and Revision, two necessary beasts that seem to want only to stomp the life out of the breathing book you have created. Dear second draft: what happened to all the fun? Have no fear. This three-hour class will arm you, valiant beginning novelist, with tools to vanquish your writerly perfectionism and make editing seem like play.
You'll learn scene-building tips, methods of crafting an emotional arc, and you'll re-examine your beginnings and endings. You'll describe your germinating novel to a roundtable of interested peers. You'll focus again and again on what interested you in your book in the first place, and you'll learn to look at what it's become now that it's on the page. This class will be useful for any writers who have produced the first draft of a novel (here meaning any work of fiction over 45,000 words—no matter if it's got an ending) and are eager to take the next step. Beginning novelists will leave bemused, delighted, and ready.
