Sometimes students ask when I know I'm done revising. My answer is: I'm done when I can read through my work without once thinking, "No one'll notice that." This advanced class will explore short story revision strategies and help you put those strategies into action. The (25-page, max.) story you submit before the first class will be workshopped, and so will its revision, before the end of term.
There are many steps between first draft and final revision, which we'll cover in class. We'll discuss when it's time to seek out feedback and the difference between early- and late-stage revision. We'll go over specific revision strategies including adding or removing a frame, changing point of view, uncovering and enhancing inchoate symbolism, and tweaking your style. You should already have a complete (though not finished) short story you're interested in revising over the course of the class.
Every student must submit via email a story of no more than 25 pages (double-spaced, as a Microsoft Word document) no less than a week before start of class, to firstname.lastname@example.org, with "Conley C., Loft Winter 2017" in the subject line. $10 copy fee.
