There is no one path to writing poetry, and for many, poetry has historically been inaccessible. Often writing that is labeled poetry isn't always reflective of the communities that read them. This class is meant to create conversations about ways people of color have been marginalized through formal writing and to rewrite the rules of what poetry is and who gets to write it. We will investigate poetic form by artists of color and critically discuss the ways they used form as an act of resistance. Participants will write and workshop their own poems in the forms of their choosing as well as forms they will create. All levels of experience welcome, as we all have a story to tell.
