Every writer craves an authentic voice and strong themes—two key elements that make writing stand out. Both voice and theme reveal emotional truth, linking writer and reader in a personal way. But how does a writer identify her or his unique voice, develop it, and use it to craft themes that matter? Through innovative writing exercises and constructive critique, we'll explore the difference between narrative voice and character voice, how themes emerge in a piece of fiction or memoir, ways to thread these themes for greatest impact, and how voice and theme weave together. Great for writers working on long or short works-in-progress that need stronger threading via pacing and image.

Each week you'll study an aspect of theme and voice, then share a short section of your writing for helpful feedback from Mary and the class. We'll focus on different sections each week: key openings, middles, and endings of scenes or chapters where theme and voice could use some strengthening. By the end of the class, you'll have transformed stalled, stuck, or just-started fiction or memoir into writing that stands out for an agent or editor—and really speaks to readers.
