Chapbooks became popular in the early 19th century. Simply put, they are small booklets of poems, sometimes containing a theme. In this Loft/MCBA collaborative class, we'll write and design our own chapbook.

During the first 2 class sessions we'll explore short form poems such as haiku, tanka, and cinquain and then we'll begin to draft our own. There will be time for feedback and revision, as well as sequence planning for a small poetry collection.

During the final two class meetings we'll learn about book design, organization of pages, structure, and binding, using MCBA studio equipment to bind chapbooks containing the poems created (or revised) during the first two class meetings. Students' individual sequence of poems will become a physical object, digitally printed in a small edition.

(All skill levels welcome, but you'll need to be somewhat proficient in Microsoft Word, Pages, or Adobe InDesign; no experience necessary in book making).
