Fairy tales uphold their culture's values: within our patriarchal, capitalist, ageist, ableist, racist society, women are brutalized, erased, forgotten, made passive. In this poetry workshop, participants will write against the untrue fairy tale narratives about women's lives. We will explore the false promises of passivity, beauty, marriage, courtship, and attraction in the age of #metoo, the fight for racial equity, and political lies.
Some questions we will ask: What have fairy tales promised you? How have those promises been broken? How can we reclaim our and own our stories and fight against these fallacies? After an examination of some model poems and a quick review of the qualities of good poetry, the class will open up your writing with a variety of exercises meant reclaim your voice and draw the sword of your pen to fight back against the myth of the fairy tale. No critiquing, but we will share a selection our work at the end of the day.
Bring a bag lunch; we'll break as needed.
