In this class, we'll read and discuss a variety of poems in order to strengthen our understanding of several elements of craft.

More specifically, we'll discuss image, persona, metaphor, and narrative. In addition to thinking about these specific craft elements, we'll think more broadly about what makes a poem memorable—what makes a poem stick with you long after you've read it?

We'll also take time to generate new work, share, and get feedback. Students will leave class with a deeper understanding of image, persona, metaphor, and narrative, and they'll have generated several drafts of new work.

Please bring to class a poem you love that demonstrates an element of craft. Be prepared to speak briefly about why you love the poem and what craft element you see in the work. Make sure to stick around Open Book for an author reading and book signing after class with Caitlin Bailey, hosted by Milkweed Bookstore 6 p.m. (free and open to the public).
