Persona poems, poems written in the voice of someone or something else, are both thrilling and challenging. There are not only writing elements to consider, such as syntax, vocabulary, character psychology, world building and plot, but also sociopolitical questions to ask of ourselves before and during the writing process.
In this six-week class, we will explore the various skills often called upon for the persona poem: historical research, futuristic imagining, social criticism, identity comparisons, playwriting, and most importantly, empathy. We will approach persona work with clear intention and purpose, and allow our writing to be guided accordingly.
You are encouraged to bring a computer, tablet, or phone in order to conduct research during class. Together we will explore how the raw research can ground and enrich our writing.
We will examine the creation of the speaker's voice, tone, speech patterns, worldview etc. We will explore distinctions between the character's perspective and our own. We will practice plotting the path of a theme throughout a poem, authentically. We will ask the necessary questions of ourselves in order to write poems that both respect and challenge our future audiences.
