How can we write poetry to process current events? To give voice to the important moments that we see unfolding around us? To make social change?
In 2014, Rattle began "Poets Respond," a call for submissions that explore the past week's headlines. In this class we'll look at poems from that platform and others that give the focus, lyricism, imagery, and perspective of poetry to current events. We'll explore why this kind of work is important, what makes these poems effective, and how we can use the techniques other poets employ to make our own poems sing. We'll then engage with some writing exercises to generate new work of our own, using our new found skills, and workshop in class.
We'll end our class with a poetry reading and a discussion about strategies for submitting and publishing work that is timely (or time sensitive.) This class is available to writers at all levels, but is best suited to intermediate and advanced level poets who have a working knowledge of the genre.
