Wizards and witches live among us. Animals talk to each other. It's the year 2060, and humans are living on the moon. Have you ever wondered how your favorite writers can transport you from your living room into a completely different world? Do you have an imaginary world in your head that you're itching to share with others?
In this class for young writers, we'll learn how to build fictional worlds from the ground up. We'll study techniques that other writers have used, and concentrate on building our own fictional worlds, too. How can we describe a spaceship? What about a world that's under the sea?
Get your imagination whirring. Learn and practice techniques for transporting your readers somewhere they've never been! We'll do in-class games and writing exercises, share our writing with one another, read excerpts from books (Harry Potter; Percy Jackson; Howl's Moving Castle; Sarah, Plain and Tall; The First Two Lives of Lukas-Kasha, etc.), look at comic books and graphic novels, and practice supporting each other's writing goals. This class will focus on writing science fiction and fantasy, but anyone interested in practicing their fiction writing is welcome!
