Without a main character, there is no story. Through character, we discover new worlds, encounter obstacles, and push our imagination as we enter the mind of another. The crafting of the protagonist, then, is the foundation for the entire story. How do we decide who the main character is? What do we reveal about them? How should they change over the course of the story, whether it's in a few comic book panels or an entire novel?

We will attempt, as a class, to answer challenging questions. Such as: Do we have to like our protagonists? Do they have to be a good person? How do we create literary alter egos? This class will cover a range of material and activities from books like Divergent but also movies and TV shows like Veronica Mars. Once we gather inspiration, we'll design a protagonist as a class, and then proceed to create our own characters. Finally, we'll share our characters and receive feedback from the teacher and classmates, as we craft the outline of a story that our new characters deserve.
