In today's poetry scene, more writers are taking non-traditional approaches to their work. Many writers express themselves through multiple genres and mediums, others are drawn to the specific potential and power of poetry. But how can poets apply the strengths of other genres to their own work, while remaining poets by trade? This class is for poets who are already thinking outside of the poet's paradigm(s), as well as those who wish to begin.
In this class, we will watch, read and discuss artistic works from film, music videos, performance poetry, short stories, theater, and more. We'll analyze what makes these works effective in their medium, and then apply those elements and practices to our own work. Whether you are generating new work or on revising existing work, this class will encourage bold re-imagining of what your poetry can do. There will be opportunities to share some of your work in progress in a safe space for risk-taking and creative exploration.
