Is your villain "Superbad"? Through character study, in-class discussion, and guided practice, we'll explore how to build exquisitely creepy, psychologically complex, three-dimensional villains who serve our stories well.

We'll first study "the anatomy of a villain," dissecting some of fiction's most memorable villains in order to identify why they're so compelling. Next, we'll discuss the craft behind building these villains, and why having a deep understanding of our chosen genre is vitally important. Finally, we'll do some hands-on character development exercises that help us defy those "Snidely Whiplash" stereotypes, to craft a villain who's exciting, worthy, three-dimensional, and who forces us to tell a more universal human story in which readers—and authors—might see themselves.
