In this class, we'll learn how to completely immerse ourselves in worlds of our own creating by building workable fantasy worlds for our characters to live in. We'll go over how environment and geography shapes characters, both physically and culturally, and look at examples of specialized characters in classic and contemporary fantasy literature.

We'll start with drawing out maps of the place we'd like our characters to inhabit, with special attention given to geographical features such as waterways, mountains, and even nearby planetary bodies that can be incorporated into our stories, and talk about the common-sense rules of writing place-based fiction (ranging from the basic laws of science to the physical limitations of characters), as well as how to step outside those rules to make our stories even more interesting.

By the end of the class, students will have made a portfolio of map (or maps), character sketches, and short anecdotal stories of their imaginary "world" to help inspire them write longer works.
