What makes creative nonfiction "creative?" In this intermediate class, students will learn how to employ tools of creative writing to personal and observed narratives. Students will examine how experience, reflection, research, and imagination are integrated into the evolving genre of creative nonfiction. We'll read and discuss work by Eula Biss, Annie Dillard, Jo Ann Beard, Melissa Febos, Nick Flynn, and Jesmyn Ward, with an eye toward the craft elements at play that make these pieces work as well as they do.
Students will practice techniques for creating original works of their own and analyze one another's attempts to artfully place the subjective in the context of the larger world. We'll spend class time reading, discussing, writing from prompts, and getting feedback from peers. Please bring a bag lunch; we'll use the lunch time to read and respond to essays. There is a $5 copy fee per student.
