Anyone can ask a tough question. What makes an interview great is coaxing out an unexpected answer. To get new answers from people who have been interviewed a thousand times before, celebrities need to be knocked off their well-rehearsed anecdotes and politicians can?t be allowed to repeat the same set of talking points. You can pester people into originality but there are other approaches, too: sharing something about yourself, or asking about a specific memory or feeling.

We'll cover common interview mistakes and how to dig yourself out conversational dead ends. Ana Marie Cox conducted the "Talk" interviews on the back page of the New York Times magazine for two years and now hosts "With Friends Like These," a politics-and-relationships podcast on the Crooked Media network.
