"Writing is an intimate letter to a stranger," wrote Pico Iyer. When we write personal essays, we are doing just that: writing an intimate letter to strangers, readers who will share our thoughts and our world. A personal essay is the door that opens onto our soul. It is a way to look at ourselves, and then invite others to get to know us better.
In this four-week course, we will focus on four different types of writing: exposition, narration, expression, and persuasion. Each session will include discussing short selected readings, and introducing the specific kind of writing. Class time will include in-class writing as well as sharing what you write with the other class members. We will also discuss where and how to publish your polished pieces.
