Have you ever noticed how you can recognize some poets' work, even before you know who the author is? How does a writer craft a distinct poetic voice without getting boxed into a single style? If you're ready to take a deep dive into the inner workings of your own poetry, this class is for you. We'll use readings and class discussion to talk about the elements that make up poetic voice, including syntax, diction, line, tone, and subject matter. We'll also use in-class exercises to help you identify what makes up your individual poetic voice, and how you can stretch and shape it as your writing develops.

This class is useful for those ready to advance their knowledge of poetic craft or those who feel like they need some new perspective on their writing. You'll have the option to share your writing in class from time to time, though there is no formal workshop component. It's recommended that students have an understanding of basic poetic terms and/or have taken previous beginning or intermediate poetry classes. $5 copy fee payable to the teaching artist.
