Is this the year to finish writing or revising your story? Maybe you need a jump-start on a draft, or maybe you aren't sure what else to do for a rewrite. You just know what you've got isn't working. This class shows what to consider in re-visioning story. We'll start with the big picture needed to shape the story you're telling. Next, we'll discover how point of view affects narrative, then find out how a character's journey overlays the narrative arc and how character motivation intersects with this arc. We'll learn how to build atmosphere and mood as part of setting, and finally wrap up by exploring the essential components of dynamic endings.

Each week we'll read a short fiction and a short memoir piece to learn what guidance the masters of our time have on the topic addressed. Outside of class, the teaching artist will critique additional writing in a private half-hour consult with each student. Copy fee of $3 due at first class session. This is the first of a set of two classes (the second coming spring term; take one or both) designed to help strengthen narrative, deepen characters, and focus intentions to better ensure that the story in your head—whether fiction or nonfiction—translates fully to the page.
