Winter is a fantastic time for reading and writing, but the effort can be lonely. Come break the isolation! This class is for fiction writers with some experience who are looking for artistic camaraderie. We will write together, discuss literature, and give constructive comments on each other's work in progress. This class will have two consecutive sections. Student writers are welcome to take either section, or both. Students who take both will have two opportunities to have work discussed in class.

In each of the first three weeks of both sections, we'll focus on one aspect of craft. We will experiment with diverse writing exercises that deepen our understanding and skills and push us into new territory. We will read stories and excerpts of masterworks that exemplify the creativity and craft we're striving for. Students will be encouraged to actively continue working on a piece of fiction, either short story or novel. In Section One, we will focus on characterization, story versus plot, and point of view. In Section Two, coming in spring term (March), we'll concentrate on setting; voice and dialogue; and descriptive language. During the last three weeks of both sessions, we will continue to discuss craft, editing, revision and publishing, but primarily we'll have constructive, craft-focused discussions of student work. Come prepared to write a lot in class, read outside of class, engage in lively discussions, and have up to 20 pages of a work in progress read & commented on by both the teaching artist and your fellow writers. $5 copy fee. Limit of 12 students.
