Drawing on our memories of favorite or sought-after meals, particular flavors, and desired tastes, we will reflect on personal experiences with food, love, and life. Whether recalling a delightful encounter or downright disaster, we will explore the alchemy and chemistry of food. Through reading and discussing the work of notable food writers such as Anthony Bourdain, Madhur Jeffrey, MFK Fisher, Nigel Slater, Bill Buford, and Julia Child, we will hone our craft and strengthen our voices. Students will be encouraged to explore the different genres of food memoir, i.e. restaurant reviews, personal essay, as well as recipe writing with voice and heart.
