Great children's book texts honor the collaborative nature of the reader/writer relationship. It's vital that we allow space for the imaginations of our readers. With this in mind, we will discuss the powerful roles patience and restraint play in effective storytelling, from picture books up through middle grade. We will also consider the role music plays in a successful text, and look at the following books for examples of craft: Beekle by Dan Santat, The Skunk by Mac Barnett, Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson, and Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai.
Bring a bag lunch; we'll break as needed.
Matt de la Pena will be happy to review picture book texts by students; please bring to class what you'd like him to review.
