From market research to submission formatting to actually submitting a story, this class will walk students through the process of sending out a short story. Writers of all genres are welcome, but the example stories and subgenres discussed are science fiction and fantasy-focused.

If students have a finished story, they will receive a developmental critique note and personalized submission suggestion from the teaching artist. A finished story is not required for the class.

Students will learn about market research, warning signs, and choosing a good match for their story. We will discuss genres, subgenres, and themes. We will talk about how to tailor an already-written story to a particular market. Students will be guided in formatting their manuscript, creating support documents, submitting their story, and managing their submissions.

Students will create and receive feedback on:
* a polished, formatted story submission
* a cover letter
* an author bio
* an author photo
* a query letter
* submission tracking documents
* a Top 10 list of publication markets for their story

Students will need a laptop or tablet. A $5 copy fee is payable to the teaching artist at the beginning of the class.
