This is a travel writing class that pushes the boundaries of a typical travel writing class: we'll be reading and writing as global citizens and adventurers. We'll dissolve whatever boundaries might exist between "travel writing" and writing about place, landscape, cities, globalism, immigration and living abroad, and how travel and transit have rapidly evolved in a digital, globalized world.
This class is ideal for writers and bloggers interested in traditional travel writing, whether literary or journalistic—we'll focus on long-form literary travel writing, and explore crossover works that double as reportage. It's also ideal for those who are interested in writing narrative features, opinion pieces, short essays or blog posts that deal with place, landscape, adventure, and global issues.
The first half of the course will focus on reading master works and exciting new voices in travel writing while experimenting across the genre with short writing assignments. In the second half, we'll continue to explore as readers while giving feedback on our own work in the writer's workshop. Students should expect to end the class with two finished, workshopped pieces—or two chapters, for those working on a book.
No Class 11/22. Copy fee $5
