Have you led such an eventful life that people often say you should write a book? Or is it just the opposite: you feel your life has been too ordinary to write about, and you've been ignoring the ember glowing inside you, leading you back time and again to that perpetually blank page? Whether you have lots of stories or only a few, or even if you think you have none at all, you will be surprised at the richness that emerges by the end of this introductory course.
We'll start with exercises designed to sharpen your senses as to the details of daily life, past and present. We'll consider memory: how it functions on its own and how it sometimes needs to be nudged by invention. Studying the published writings of others, we'll explore how the simplest elements can be woven into narratives of depth and meaning. A field trip will provide additional inspiration. Finally, there will be ample opportunity for supportive, constructive feedback from class members and the teaching artist.
Goal: progress on a first draft. Bring notebook, pen or pencil, enthusiasm and a spirit of exploration. No class 11/22. Copy fee of $10.
