Have you ever written a sonnet or haiku? How about a pantoum or ghazal? Using forms helps poets—of any level—take a fresh look at what inspires them and generate new poems.

In this 8-week class, we explore new forms each week, and you generate 7 new poems. All receive constructive critique from your teaching artist and fellow students. In the final week, you revise a poem for full-class workshop.

New to poetry? Perfect! Forms are a great way to start writing—like building a house with boards already cut. We start with no-fear, no-fail forms to build confidence. Already published? Wonderful! Using forms builds abilities in voice, image, metaphor, and subject by challenging yourself to share your talents through new shapes.

We will use Wendy Bishop's Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Poem, with other sources, all provided in the online classroom. Log in anytime to access the week's reading and discussions. Create and submit a new poem each week for feedback. We'll schedule our optional mid-course live chat to accommodate the most students. You will come away from this class with 7 new poems—and a toolkit of forms to inspire new poems long after our class has ended!
