This eight-week advanced poetry course will focus on revising poems that may be stuck, static, or still. We will explore transformation of both form and content, reading contemporary poems in which a metamorphosis occurs in narrative (Janet McNally's "Multiverse," Catherine Bowman's "The Frida Kahlo Tree") as well as those that convert found text into poems (Tyehimba Jess's "Mark Twain vs Blind Tom," Robin Coste Lewis's "Voyage of the Sable Venus") and those that shift genre (Kimiko Hahn's "Toxic Flora").

We will pay close attention to the techniques and elements that make these works so transformative and exciting for the reader as well as discuss how to use them in our own works. From inserting mythological elements to blending different material to investigating alternate syntax, we will experiment with our own works in progress to create finished poems that surprise and enchant the reader.
