Character, conflict, setting, voice, plot: none of these elements can come to life but through the sentence. None of these elements on its own can command your reader's attention. The sentence is the medium through which each of these elements must pass, yet it's often overlooked by prose writers. When one's eye is on plot, conflict, or character, the sentence itself can easily become invisible—or worse, obfuscating—and the result is often a collection of forgettable words that strive to tell a memorable story.
In this class, we will read literary texts that prioritize language, paying careful attention to the writer's sentence-level choices and to the effects of these choices on the reader. Via writing exercises we will also generate our own texts, one sentence at a time, with attention to language. We will then respond to each other's sentences and rework them until they are not merely sentences but moments of experience. (Students may also choose to submit existing texts for critique.)
No class the week of Thanksgiving.
