Poet Laureate: Description, Selection, Activities                   

Project Goals: The Anoka County Library (ACL) will name a “Poet Laureate” to provide leadership for a two-year literary arts project that will be part of the ongoing celebration of its 60th Anniversary and remodeled Centennial facility. ACL has envisioned the Poet Laureate as a coordinator and creative leader for poetic and literary arts. The Poet Laureate will be part of an overall effort to advance the visibility and quality and appreciation of poetic arts in efforts to cultivate a poetry-rich community.

Poet Laureate Appointment: ACL will be the sponsors of the Poet Laureate project. The initial appointment will be for two years. Modest compensation will be provided for the Poet Laureate’s work in ACL branches and other settings. ACL will provide $4,000 in funding for the appointment, in addition to programming funding and travel expenses up to $1,000.

Residency Requirement: Applicants are required to reside within the boundaries of Twin Cities metro.

Application Deadline: Required application materials must arrive via email no later than midnight on Sunday, March 25, 2018.

Announcement of Poet Laureate: The Poet Laureate selection will be announced at the Library Board Meeting on April 16, 2018.

Selection Process: The selection process is one of self-nomination and interested candidates are asked to provide the Required Application Elements and Documentation of Selection Criteria (in the order listed below) in an email attachment to aclpoet@co.anoka.mn.us.


Application Information

The ACL Poet Laureate is an opportunity to expand the audience for poetry, raise your community profile, network, gain access to event speaking, publish additional writings, and obtain media coverage. Below are the required components to complete your application submission.

Required Application Elements:

  • Resume

  • Three samples of candidate’s poetry

  • Names of three references with knowledge of the candidate’s work (including their telephone numbers and email addresses)

Required Documentation of Selection Criteria:

  • An introductory statement in which application share their motivation to serve as ACL’s Poet Laureate, including the role poetry has played in their personal lives over time

  • A proven history of substantial publication of individual poems, chapbooks, and/or books

  • An established history of activity in the Anoka literary community, e.g. readings, publications, public presentations, and/or teaching

  • Critical acclaim as demonstrated by special honors, awards, or other recognition

  • Experience in working with a range of audiences

  • Experience in leading or conducting workshops for writers

Responsibilities may include:

  • Poetry in the Park signage

  • 60th Anniversary

  • Centennial Library sidewalk poetry

  • Centennial Library grand re-opening celebration

  • Hold office hours at local ACL branches

  • Write three poems to be featured on spoke card giveaways

  • Attend civic/community events

  • Contribute writings for location publications

  • Poem in Your Pocket Day

  • Experience in leading or conducting workshops for writers

  • Option to propose additional responsibilities for flat/hourly fee
