Manuscript Critique:
Anitra Budd

Open to: Book-length fiction and nonfiction, query letters

Limit: 100,000 words

What You’ll Submit:

A completed manuscript with a brief synopsis and author statement (one page maximum for each) or a query letter up to two pages.

What You’ll Get:

For book-length manuscripts, you’ll receive comments on the text, a 3–5 page editorial letter highlighting your manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses in plot, character development, style, and structure, as well as suggestions for revision. The critique includes a brief follow-up meeting (by phone or in person) to ask questions or discuss additional concerns.

Anitra believes that the role of an editor is twofold: to help writers achieve the best possible versions of their manuscript and to be an early advocate for future readers of the work. She fulfills this dual role by listening more than talking, asking the right questions, and offering honest feedback that still respects the writer’s vision. While Anitra enjoys working with writers at all stages of their careers, she has a particular affinity for debut and unpublished voices.

For query letters, you’ll receive a line edit and a 1–2 page evaluation letter.

Price:
  • $500 + 2.5 cents/word
  • Query Letter: $105

Turnaround:

  • Up to 10,000 words: 1 week
  • Up to 25,000 words: 2 weeks
  • Up to 50,000 words: 4 weeks
  • Up to 100,000 words: 6 weeks
  • Query Letter: 1 week
Please email manuscripts@loft.org before signing up to describe your manuscript, your goals, and your timeline.

For all manuscripts, Anitra provides a broad critique similar to a response you'd get from an agent or editor. For more detailed/line-by-line edits, consider another editor such as Esther Porter.
