Young Writers' Program

The Loft Young Writers' Program features creative writing classes for youth ages 6–17. Classes are generally broken down into suggested age ranges of 6–8, 9–11, 12–14, 13–17, and 15–17. The bulk of our youth classes are offered in the summer, but there are classes offered all year round.

If you’re brand new to the Loft, or to writing in general, and have questions about where to start, please feel free to call the Loft education office. We have something for everyone—from the youngster just learning to put pen to paper to the seasoned high school senior with a novel already under her belt. We believe strongly that each youth should have the opportunity to explore, dream, and create, all while exploring their voice and creative talents. The Loft’s Young Writers’ Program is here to meet you on your writing journey and cheer you on to the next stop! We’ve got a pencil and notebook with your name on it, and they’re waiting to take you anywhere your imagination can carry you.

The Loft’s youth programming is made possible through the generous contributions of Loft members, Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, Target, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
