Rent Writers' Studios at Open Book

Who may become a regular studio user?

The Loft has created a truly unique and inspiring place for members in the writing community. Furnished with hand-crafted writing tables, designed with your creativity in mind, the Loft's Writers' Studios are, as one writer told us, "a dream come true."

"This little big room is all I want and need!”

What will I find in the studios?

Each studio is a room, complete with a privacy door and two windows facing a stunning view of the downtown skyline. The studios are located on the second floor, behind the Resource Library, at the back of Open Book for greater privacy. Each has a beautiful wooden writing table, an adjustable work chair, a rocking chair for reading, overhead and desk lighting, a posting wall with thumbtacks, as well as wireless Internet access.  The studios also share a small lounge area containing a refrigerator, coffee maker, and lockers. Each studio user will have access to a locker (about 14" x 16" x 16") for projects and personal belongings.

For how much time may I use a studio?

The studios operate under a timeshare model. You pay per month for 24 hour access to the studios. While you’re using the studios, you can come in on a regular schedule or on the spur of the moment, up to 20 hours per week. You can write in any of the seven studios which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All contracts begin on the 1st of the month and extend for one, three, or six months.

  • 1 month commitment -- $100
  • 3 month commitment -- $225
  • 6 month commitment -- $400

"The studios break that writer's barrier when you find yourself just writing in a closet. Here, when you want, you can emerge into the stimulating environment of Open Book."

Only Loft supporting members may use the studios. You must remain a Loft member during your studio use, period.

"The Studios are great they remind me of a North Shore cabin."

If I drive to the studios, where can I park?

Sometimes there will be room in Open Book's parking lot, next to the building. In addition, there are 4- and 10-hour parking meters on the streets near Open Book, and ample room in the inexpensive parking lots within blocks of Open Book. (Exception: during some Metrodome events, parking will be tighter.)

Can I take the bus or train to Open Book?

Metro Transit has several routes that connect to the bus stop in front of Open Book. The light rail station is 3 blocks from Open Book, on the Chicago Avenue side of the Metrodome. Metro Transit can provide specific directions from your point of origin. Contact them at www.metrotransit.org or 612-373-3333.

Are the studios accessible by wheelchair?

Open Book is accessible in its entirety to people using wheelchairs, including the studios. Studio furniture has been built to accommodate the special height needs of individuals using wheelchairs.
