Thomas R. Smith
Thomas R. Smith

"Like many teachers, I teach what I myself would like to learn. Fear causes us to close and shield our hearts. Poetry can be a powerful counterforce to fear, but there is no formula for making it so. Together we explore the way, poem by poem."

Thomas R. Smith is the author of four full-length books of poems: Keeping the Star (1988), Horse of Earth (1994), The Dark Indigo Current (2000), and Waking before Dawn (2006). His chapbook, Kinnickinnic, appeared in 2008. He was included in The Best American Poetry 1999 (Scribner, edited by Robert Bly), and his poems have been featured on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac. He lives in River Falls, Wisconsin.
