Jude Nutter—I Wish I Had a Heart Like Yours, Walt Whitman

Open Book

Free

In “Return of the Heroes,” Walt Whitman refers to the casualties of the American Civil War: “the dead to me mar not. . . . / they fit very well in the landscape under the trees and grass. . . .” In her new poetry collection, Jude Nutter challenges Whitman’s statement by exploring her own responses to war and conflict and, in a voice by turns rueful, dolorous, and imagistic, reveals why she cannot agree.

Nutter, who was born in England and grew up in Germany, has a visceral sense of history as a constant, violent companion. Drawing on a range of locales and historical moments—among them Rwanda, Sarajevo, Nagasaki, and both world wars—she replays the confrontation of personal history colliding with history as a social, political, and cultural force. In many of the poems, this confrontation is understood through the shift from childhood innocence and magical thinking to adult awareness and guilt.

Fady Joudeh with David Mura, Anya Achtenberg, Raed Abughazeleh & music by Salah Abdelfattah—Unfortunately, It Was Paradise: A Tribute to Mahmoud Darwish

Open Book

Free

Fady Joudeh, Palestinian-American poet and physician, winner of the 2007 Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition

"When renowned novelist Ahdaf Soueif said that the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish was 'the last poet who could fill a football stadium,' it wasn't hyperbole. A Darwish reading in Beirut earlier this year drew more than 25,000 people. His recent funeral, which garnered little attention here in the U.S., drew thousands more. Who was Mahmoud Darwish? Many considered him to be the national poet of Palestine and saw his poetry as an expression of the struggle of the Palestinian people."---John Lundberg

Tina Chang & Ravi Shankar (editors)—Language for a New Century: Contemporary Poetry from the Middle East, Asia, and Beyond

Open Book

Free

Language for a New Century celebrates the artistic and cultural forces flourishing today in the East, bringing together an unprecedented selection of works by South Asian, East Asian, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian poets as well as poets living in the Diaspora. Some poets, such as Bei Dao and Mahmoud Darwish, are acclaimed worldwide, but many more will be new to the reader. The collection includes 400 unique voices—political and apolitical, monastic and erotic—that represent a wider artistic movement that challenges thousand-year-old traditions, broadening our notion of contemporary literature.

Each section of the anthology—organized by theme rather than by national affiliation—is preceded by a personal essay from the editors that introduces the poetry and exhorts readers to examine their own identities in light of these powerful poems. In an age of violence and terrorism, often predicated by cultural ignorance, this anthology is a bold declaration of shared humanity and devotion to the transformative power of art.

Louise Dunlap—Undoing the Silence: Six Tools for Social Change Writing

Open Book

Free

Louise Dunlap will present a one hour writing workshop on writing for social change, and she’ll then read passages from her book Undoing the Silence: Six Tools for Social Change Writing on Wednesday evening, April 22. The workshop is at 6pm, the reading is at 7. A Q & A with the author will follow, as well as a signing. 612-379-8999.

Louise Dunlap began her career as an activist writing instructor during the Free Speech Movement of the 1960’s. She learned that listening and gaining a feel for audience are as important to social transformation as the outspoken words of student leaders atop police cars. “Free speech is a first step, but real communication matches speech with listening and understanding. That is when thinking shifts and change happens.”
